Library News

 Pictures!

Dear Neighbors,

Writing this newsletter in November always finds me taking a moment to express my thankfulness for all of our patrons, staff, volunteers, and board members who make our little library an essential and engaging part of the town of Rush. Thanks to all of you we have been able to sustain our normal services in a year when several local libraries have reduced staff, book buying, and operating hours, so I am especially grateful for your ongoing support. Due to state and county budget cuts we know that changes are coming to the Monroe County Library System (possibly in the form of consolidated services, increasing fees & fines, reductions of book deliveries, or in some other ways not yet discerned.) We understand that 2011 will be a year of further belt-tightening; however, you can be certain that thoughtful and creative people are determined to keep MCLS thriving. We look forward to continuing to meet your learning and information needs in 2011!

Wine-Tasting Fundraiser: Friends of the Rush Library are planning their 7th Annual benefit. Join us on Saturday, February 5th, 2011 for a “Friends’ Night Out” sponsored by Erie Station Fine Wines & Liquor. This year’s event will be held at Magnolia’s at Wildwood Country Club in Rush, and will feature live music. Tickets are $30 each and are on sale Dec. 1st at the library and at Erie Station Fine Wines; they would make a terrific holiday gift.  Proceeds benefit the library’s book & program budgets, our Summer Reading Program, summer concerts, and more. Business sponsorships are still available and we are also soliciting products and services to be donated for the Silent Auction (a very popular event of the evening!) We hope you can join us for a truly wonderful night with your friends and neighbors.

Magazine Collection: If you are looking for another way to cut your household budget during tough economic times, consider borrowing our magazines instead of subscribing on your own. Linda Repka, our industrious magazine clerk, keeps our collection current, and she is always shopping for the best deals on renewals plus new subscriptions that our patrons might enjoy. You may be interested in some of our newest titles: Edible Finger Lakes, Veranda, Food Network Magazine, Digital Photo Pro, or Motor Trend. Stop in and check them out!

Policy Change: Beginning in January, patrons wishing to log on to our public PCs to use the Internet must have an unexpired library card. If it is time to update your card, please bring in a current I.D. with proof of a Monroe County address, and a staff member can help you at the circulation desk. Any fines or fees on the account must be paid in full at that time as well. Out-of-County residents can purchase a Monroe County library card with full borrowing privileges for an annual fee of $45; applications are available at the library.

Holiday Collections
:
I encourage you to stop in during December to see the lovely nativity scenes on loan from local resident
Peg Franklin and a Santa Claus collection loaned by Louise Harris. In addition, a local couple is loaning us their collection of Feather Christmas Trees for you to enjoy this holiday season. These displays come from all around the world and represent many years of devoted collecting.

Holiday Hours: Changes to our operating hours for the holidays are as follows:

Fri., Dec. 24: closed

Sat., Dec. 25: closed

Fri., Dec. 31: closing early at 5:00 pm

Sat., Jan. 1: closed

Materials owned by the Rush library are never due on days that we are closed, but if you have borrowed an item from another library branch, it could be due on a day that we are closed if they are open. Please refer to your charge receipt to confirm when your items are due. You can also check your account and renew some items online at www.libraryweb.org.

Tax Forms: Federal and New York State tax forms will no longer be mailed to your home, but will be available in limited supply at most public libraries beginning in January. Or you can download NYS forms at http://www.tax.state.ny.us/  and federal forms at http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/, or stop in and see our library staff members for help. (The normal forms provided by the government are free, but printing out unusual forms at the library will cost you 15˘ per page.)

Looking forward to seeing you,

Kirsten
